Overview

What is a trainee ADI licence?

A trainee licence — informally known as the pink badge — is issued by the DVSA to candidates who have passed ADI Parts 1 and 2 but have not yet passed Part 3. It grants you the legal right to charge pupils for driving lessons under the supervision of a qualifying sponsor (a fully registered ADI with a green badge).

The licence is designed to allow trainee ADIs to gain real teaching experience before their Part 3 test — experience that makes the test itself significantly more achievable. Research consistently shows that candidates who teach on a trainee licence before sitting Part 3 have higher first-time pass rates.

The initial licence lasts 6 months and can be renewed once, giving you a maximum of 12 months of licensed teaching before you must pass Part 3 to continue.

Application Process

How to apply for a trainee licence

1

Pass ADI Parts 1 and 2

You must hold a valid Part 1 theory test pass and a valid Part 2 driving ability test pass before you can apply for a trainee licence.

2

Find a qualified ADI sponsor

Your sponsor must be a fully registered ADI (green badge) who agrees to oversee at least 20% of your teaching during the licence period.

3

Complete the DVSA application

Submit form ADI21A to the DVSA, signed by both you and your sponsor. Enclose the £140 fee and your valid Part 1 and Part 2 pass certificates.

4

Receive your pink badge

Once approved, the DVSA sends your trainee licence badge. Display it clearly in the front windscreen whenever you are teaching.

Benefits

Why get a trainee licence?

Real teaching experience

Nothing prepares you for Part 3 like actually teaching real pupils. The trainee licence period is where theory becomes practice.

Start earning earlier

You can charge pupils for lessons on a trainee licence. Many trainees cover their Part 3 training costs from lesson income during this period.

Build your pupil base

Pupils you teach during your trainee period often stay with you after you qualify. Starting early means a fuller diary from day one as a qualified ADI.

Sponsored safety net

Your sponsor is there to support you. Regular observations give you expert feedback and help you identify what to work on before your Part 3 test.

Conditions

Trainee licence conditions

The trainee licence comes with conditions you must follow. Breaching them can result in your licence being revoked by the DVSA:

  • Display the official pink trainee badge in the windscreen when teaching — not the green ADI badge

  • Your sponsor must personally observe at least 1 in every 5 lessons you deliver

  • The licence lasts 6 months with one possible renewal — maximum 12 months in total

  • You cannot take a pupil to their driving test — trainee licences cover pre-test tuition only

  • Teaching without displaying the badge, or without the required supervision, can result in revocation

Next Steps

Transitioning to full ADI status

Once you pass Part 3, you apply to the DVSA for full ADI registration. The DVSA will issue you a green badge — the official mark of a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor.

Your sponsor relationship ends when you gain full ADI status. Pupils you have been teaching on the trainee licence can continue with you seamlessly. Many trainees enter full qualification with a ready-built pupil list and an established business routine — which is one of the biggest advantages of using the trainee licence period productively.

Tip from experienced ADIs: Use your trainee licence period to build systems for your business — scheduling, invoicing, pupil management — so you can hit the ground running the day you get your green badge.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a trainee licence?
A trainee licence (pink badge) allows you to teach pupils for payment after passing Parts 1 and 2, but before passing Part 3. Your sponsor (a qualified ADI) must oversee at least 20% of your lessons. The licence lasts 6 months and can be renewed once.
How do I find a sponsor?
Sponsors are most commonly found through driving school franchises, which often provide sponsorship as part of the franchise arrangement. You can also approach independent ADIs directly or search ADI trainer directories. DrivePro is building an instructor matching platform to help trainees find sponsors.
Can I charge for lessons?
Yes — there is no restriction on charging pupils while on a trainee licence. Many trainees begin earning from lessons to offset the cost of their Part 3 preparation.
How long does it last?
The trainee licence initially lasts 6 months. You can renew it once, giving a maximum of 12 months of licensed teaching. After 12 months, you must hold full ADI registration (green badge) to continue teaching for payment.
What are the restrictions?
You must display the pink trainee badge when teaching, have your sponsor observe at least 1 in 5 lessons, and can only deliver pre-test tuition (not take pupils to their driving test). Breaching the conditions risks revocation.
Do I need my own car?
You need a suitable car for teaching — your own or one provided through a franchise. It must be insured for use as a driving school vehicle, roadworthy, and fitted with L-plates. Dual controls are strongly recommended for safety.
