FAQ

Questions & answers

What is the ADI Part 1 theory test?
The ADI Part 1 is the first of three exams you need to pass to become an Approved Driving Instructor. It is a computer-based theory test consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception test. You must pass Part 1 before you can take Part 2 (driving ability) or Part 3 (instructional ability).
How many questions are on the ADI Part 1 test?
The multiple-choice section has 100 questions split across 4 categories (25 questions each): road procedure, instructional techniques, driving test law, and publications. You have 90 minutes to complete them. There is also a separate hazard perception section with 14 video clips.
What is the pass mark for ADI Part 1?
You need at least 85 out of 100 overall (85%) AND at least 20 out of 25 in each of the 4 categories (80%). This means you can score 85% overall but still fail if you drop below 20 in any single category. The hazard perception pass mark is 57 out of 75.
How much does the ADI Part 1 test cost?
The ADI Part 1 theory test costs £81. You book it through the DVSA at gov.uk. Tests are held at the same theory test centres as the learner test.
What topics are covered in the instructional techniques category?
Instructional techniques covers how people learn, effective teaching methods, lesson planning, client-centred learning, risk management strategies, giving feedback, demonstration techniques, and the DVSA National Standard for Driver and Rider Training.
How is this different from the learner theory test?
The ADI Part 1 is significantly harder than the learner test. It has 100 questions (vs 50), a higher pass mark (85% vs 86%), and includes two categories — instructional techniques and driving test law — that do not appear in the learner test. The road knowledge questions are also at a deeper level. We also have a free learner theory practice test if that is what you are looking for.
How many times can I take the ADI Part 1?
There is no limit on the number of attempts. However, each attempt costs £81 and you must wait at least 3 working days between attempts. Most trainers recommend thorough preparation rather than repeated attempts.
